I read a goal setting article by Rob Schultz this week that changed my perspective on goal setting. He has a Facebook group called profit seduction. The article was posted there. It talked about how so many of us struggle getting clients because we are so focused on the process. We focus on articles, blog posts. eBooks, videos and other content. What we need to focus on is the outcome.
Begin with the end in mind has been a quote I have heard for over 22 years in the direct marketing business I was associated with for that length of time. That statement matches up with what Rob Schultz talks about in his goal-setting perspective.
Start with your end goal in mind.
The example of my new goal in 2019 is this. To obtain 100 new clients in 2019.
Another example could be. To reach $100,000 income in 2019.
These goals are easy to measure.
However, don’t get caught up in thinking that you must try every process, or as Rob Schultz phrases it, a new tactic. Yes, the process or the steps on how to reach your goal is important. You don’t have to do all of them. Your process is the plan that you write out to reach your outcome. Make sure that you pick the process that will get you the end results.
We need to keep our eyes on the outcome or the end goal and the bigger prize. Focus less on the tactics or process and focus more on the goal’s outcome and you will get better results with your goals this year. Start with your end results and work backward when you write out your plan. Only do the action steps or the tactics that will help you reach your goal. I found this advice helpful when I read an article on Rob Schultz’s Facebook page.
Let me ask you this question. What is going to attract your ideal target audience?
Just listed a few common tactics or processes.
Ads, Articles, Blog Posts, Clear Content, eBooks, Social Media Posters, Videos, Webinars.
Do some research and find out what is trending with your target audience. Make a point to focus on one or two of these tactics and find something that works for your target audience and stick with it. If you are staring at this list and it overwhelms you. Pick one that excites you and start with that one.
Personally, my original list of goals focused on the process. I was excited about it at the start of January 2019. I still plan on finishing my big to-do list. However, after the first week and a half my enthusiasm dropped to rock bottom and this last week I have not been nearly as productive. Plus, life happens, and weather can affect your plans with children being home from school. Not trying to make an excuse for myself. But I am realizing that the big goals that I want to accomplish this year. I might have to take a little longer than a few weeks to get it accomplished. There is an old adage I learned as a child. Rome was not built in a day. Rome built a beautiful city and had so much to offer its people many years ago. But it took years to get it to look pretty and have their systems in place.
Fast forward to modern times. We don’ have to take as long as Rome did to put our V A business in place. But the point is simple. Focus on the bigger goal that you want to achieve. Then break it down into smaller bite-sized pieces. Pick just the first 1-3 tactics you want to use and write that down as your process. Once you master your tactics and are ready to add others you can. Just always remember what your end goal is. The 100 customers or the 100k in dollars. You choose the outcome you want to focus on this year.

Together we can achieve more. This year is a big year for all of us.
